President’s Myitkyina speech needs support especially from the Army Posted: 20 Mar 2014 06:02 AM PDT Last Sunday, 16 March, President Thein Sein made an unprecedented visit to Myitkyina, capital of the Kachin State. Unprecedented because he was accompanied by the defense chief Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing, who was with him when he delivered his address to the Kachin Baptist Federation. The following are the highlights of his speech:
A case in point is its latest 6 point "wish list" to the ARMs:
All in all, the President's tireless efforts must be lauded and supported by all. However, at the same time, the President should not forget to keep reminding himself (we don't want him to feel let down either) that people are still taking his words with a large pinch of salt. And that what they want are deeds not just words. Whatever he had said, is saying and is going to say, people are certain to measure them with the results on the ground. Because, as always, actions speak louder than words — or images. |
Mongla to call for self administered status Posted: 19 Mar 2014 09:24 AM PDT Sources in Mongla, the main base of the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA) of Sai Leun, say the group is considering a government-recognized self administered status. "As the main ethnicity in the area, apart from Shan, is Akha, it may be designated as Akha Self Administered Zone (SAZ)," said a source close to the leadership. The NDAA's domain, according to government specification, covers Mongla township, Hsaleu and surrounding areas in Mongyang township and Nampan and surrounding areas in Mongyawng township. The Akha, together with their cousins Akho, are the most numerous and widely distributed of the hill tribes in eastern Shan State, according to Burma: A Handbook of Practical Information (1906) by former British Commissioner J.G. Scott. The National Convention 1993-2007, held under the auspices of President Thein Sein's predecessor, Senior Gen Than Shwe, had stipulated that an ethnic nationality that applies for a self administered status must have the majority population in each of at least two townships that are contiguous. Mongla, according to a report by Democratic Voice of Burma, has already conducted a census in areas under its control. It has not yet disclosed whether the Akha fits with Naypyitaw's criteria. The other ethnic nationality pushing for a SAZ status is Lahu. The National Convention had dismissed it saying the Lahu did not meet the criteria. Shan State already has 5 self administered areas: Danu, Kokang, Palaung, PaO and Wa. |
