FM prepares to discuss Myitsone, peace process during China visit

Foreign Minister Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is likely to be poring over her briefing books today as she prepares for what could be a testing visit to China from August 17 to 20. Two issues in particular are likely to be on the agenda: the future of the suspended Myitsone dam project and the peace process, both of more than passing interest to Beijing.

Low-Lying roads and townships within the city of Mandalay flooded after near-record rainfall yesterday, and locals are worried that the rains will continue. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology recorded 6.26 inches (15.9 centimetres) of rainfall, less than 1 inch shy of the August 24, 1987, record of 6.89 inches.
