Smartphones these days come with virtually endless capabilities. Performance and functionality is no longer strictly determined by the operating system itself, but primarily by the associated ecosystem and digital content available. Between Android and iOS, there are over 1.6 million applications available. Windows Phone has over 145,000 apps, and BlackBerry OS has somewhere north of 105,000 apps. Just take a second and try to quantify those numbers – imagine having to scroll through a list of 800,000 applications every time you want to download a new app, instead of simply searching. ... Nokia is easily the most exciting smartphone manufacturer around when it comes to cameras. Sure, Apple generally nails things with the iPhone, and HTC is stepping-up its own imaging game, but between optical stabilization and the massive 41-megapixel sensor on the PureView 808 (and maybe soon, EOS) Nokia’s making the big pushes that really capture our attention. HTC hasn’t exactly been been keeping a high profile when it comes to large-screened mobile devices. Sure, there’s been the odd tablet, and it flirted with the phablet space with the five-inch Droid DNA/Butterfly, but such models have been few and far between. Last week, we heard that HTC could be looking to do something about that and was planning to introduce a larger version of the One, with a screen somewhere in the five-to-six-inch range. If we’re to believe the rumors, a number of new smartphones in the Galaxy S 4 family could be just about to be announced; it’s looked like Samsung could be planning to reveal the S4 Active, Zoom, and Mini right around the end of the month. As far as specs are concerned the OPPO Find 5 packs a five-inch screen with 1080p resolution, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU running at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, 1.9-megapixel front-facer, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean powering it alongside a 2,500mAh battery. It looks like it will be a busy June. Following Apple’s WWDC, the rumored Android 4.3 launch with maybe a white Nexus 4, a possible Nokia event, comes Samsung Premiere 2013. The invitation features the Galaxy and ATIV brands, which are the flagship Android and Windows families within the product portfolio. June 20, London, 7p local time (2p EDT), are the details made public alongside a link to Samsung’s YouTube where it will be streamed live. Up until Motorola and Google co-released the XOOM tablet, Apple dominated the tablet arena. Various manufacturers attempted to “shoe-horn” the smartphone version of Android onto tablets with much larger screens, and actually did some with some measure of success. Google politely asked manufacturers to hold off while they put together a version of Android that was designed specifically for the larger screen sizes that are what make tablets so much different than smartphones.
