A thousand unsaid words: Umpiem refugee camp

Posted: 10 Oct 2014 11:53 PM PDT

Not much is different at Umpiem from other refugee camps at the Thai-Burmese border, except that many of the residents could be listed as long forgotten heroes.

Once prominent – the core leaders of the 1988 student revolution, the black listed politicians of Suu Kyi's NLD party and the senior commanders from the Tatmadaw – have all faded into the shadow of obscurity at the camp.

A picture is said to be more powerful than thousand words, as Dutch photojournalist Rohan Radheya captures the lives of refugees inside the Umpiem camp.

DVB Debate: What’s missing from Burma’s education system?

Posted: 10 Oct 2014 09:44 PM PDT

Education in Burma's is ranked amongst the worst in the world. Still based on a rote learning method that teaches through repetition, teachers have little opportunity to move outside the strict curriculum.

With a tiny proportion of the national budget, state schools do not have the funding, facilities or staff to provide any sort of extra curricular education.

On the panel this week: Curriculum Consultant Dr Myint Thein, Dr Thein Lwin from the National Network for Education Reform, Education Specialist for Unicef, Dr Khin Mon Nyein and Upper House MP U Thein Swe.
