Committees urge minor budget cuts

Defence has escaped unscathed from a review of next year's budget that has recommended relatively minor cuts to a range of government departments, it emerged on January 5. The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Public Accounts Joint Committee recommended cuts of only 0.15 percent from the government budget proposal for 2016-17 financial year, the first of the new government's term.
